NICE TA232 - JAPC decided restricted use until consultants are familiar with its usage and place in treatment

RED:1,2,5 (for epilepsy) for those patients referred to and/or under the care of a Derbyhsire based specialist/Trust. JAPC advised that requests for these drugs from tertiary centres should be in line with the host area prescribing committee's decision.

Red Drug Classifications

  • 1: Requiring specialist assessment to enable patient selection, initiation and ongoing treating
  • 2: Requiring long term on-going monitoring of efficacy by a specialist and not suitable for shared care
  • 5: Is new to clinical practice and unfamiliar, necessitating a period of accumulation of experience, firstly (and most rapidly) by consultants/specialists
