Comments

  • GREEN: Preferred drug of choice to treat erectile dysfunction (decision date - May 2014)
  • Cost-effective to prescribe generically
  • DO NOT PRESCRIBE (DNP): Not to be prescribed by brand e.g. Viagra (decision date - July 2018)

From 1st August 2014 restrictions on the prescribing of generic sildenafil for erectile dysfunction (ED) have been lifted following new legislation meaning that generically written prescriptions for sildenafil no longer require the annotation "SLS”.

  • RED:1,2,8  Revatio for pulmonary arterial hypertension (20mg tablets & 10mg/mL oral suspension)
  • RED:1,2,8 for digital ulceration in systemic sclerosis (decision date - June 2015)

 

Red Drug Classifications

  • 1: Requiring specialist assessment to enable patient selection, initiation and ongoing treating
  • 2: Requiring long term on-going monitoring of efficacy by a specialist and not suitable for shared care
  • 8. NHS England commissioned – to be used in line with NHSE commissioning intentions
